Sanfilippo, Phyllis
Subtitled “A selected annotated bibliography” the first part contains summaries of and comments on 91 articles and books on the Technique. It is an attempt at making a uniform valuation of the articles and books by measuring them against a set of ten criteria. As the written word cannot communicate the kinaesthetic experience, a “motivating factor in the compilation of this bibliography has been to distinguish between those words which are helpful and those which are misleading.” Part 2 is a non-annotated listing of 133 articles and books which deal with the Technique..

The Technique applied to swimming: an introductory book that never loses sight of the psycho-physical nature of the Technique. The benefits of swimming are discussed in relation to fitness (current conceptions of which are questioned). The principles of orientation, balance, buoyancy and breathing in swimming are explained and illustrated. Much advice, including some practical exercises, is given on how to deal with fears and other restricting attitudes towards swimming. Breast-stroke, front and back crawl are discussed and stroke guides are given.

Stallibrass, Chloe
This supplement deals exclusively with issues around sexuality which can arise within a training course. There are subjects to be discussed professionally and issues to do with interaction among students and between students and teachers. It is based on the same set of interviews as the author's Sexuality and the Alexander Technique, but is restricted to matters relating to training. To avoid misunderstanding the author issued the material separately for Alexander Technique students and teachers, expecting that its confidentiality will be respected.

The first essay “The Homo Clausus in Statu Nascendi” means something like “the closed human being in the state of being born” (the title is not translated). Its starting point is Nobert Elias’ theory that complex civilization increases the conflict between the mechanism of self-control and one’s instincts, resulting in greater alienation. Taking the example of birth it hints that tension and stress results in babies of Western civilization being born alienated or ‘imprisoned’. It suggests Alexander teachers can learn from Elias’ theories and that sociologists in turn can learn from the Alexander Technique. It is possibly written for social scientists as some terms like “figurational sociologist” and “neo-critical Habermasian school” are not explained. “Dewey and Alexander” retells the story of Alexander and Dewey’s friendship. It sets out to answer whether Alexander exploited Dewey for his own benefit. Although called “essays,” their treatment of the subject, style and detailed references makes them more like semi-academic articles.

This booklet investigates whether inconsistent records of the printings of Man's Supreme Inheritance and the present-day rarity of 1918-edition Man's Supreme Inheritance was caused by a without-permission inclusion of John Dewey’s appreciation “Reply to a Reviewer,” (the “reviewer” being Randolph Bourne). It examines in detail the printing history of Man's Supreme Inheritance until 1946. Inconclusive.

Concerning the printing history and numbering of editions of Man’s Supreme Inheritance and Randoph Bourne's unacknowledged criticism of the book.
The author argues that in becoming “civilised” we have adopted habits of using our mouths and teeth which interfere with the freedom of the neck and head; more especially, the custom of eating with knife and fork is assumed to cause the mandible to become chronically retracted, hence causing tension elsewhere in the upper neck area. The argument is based on Norbert Elias’ civilisation theory, and it hinges on what is correct or “natural” occlusion and indications that “civilised” people generally suffer from malocclusion.

Stevens, Chris - Christopher Stevens (1943-2003)
This is a description of research into the possible mechanism and effects of the Technique. The first part, “Experimental Studies” gives a brief resume of research to date, especially detailing Stevens’ own research into, for example, 1) sway behaviour in normal subjects and experienced Alexander students, and 2) height and shoulder width before and after Alexander lessons. The second part, “Alexander research in the light of current scientific concepts” contains descriptions of physiological mechanisms of posture and movement, e.g. proprioception, stretch reflex, elasticity of spine and of tissue, muscle properties and activities, touch and consciousness. It includes many references and summaries of research into these areas.Knowledge of basic anatomical and physiological terms is assumed and otherwise it is not an easy read.

This Memorial Lecture discusses the value of scientific research for the Technique and sums up the various research projects into the effects of the Technique. It contains what were then the most recent results the author had obtained from his own research and other recent research concerning muscles and mind which are of interest to Alexander Teachers.

A brief summary of various research projects into the effects of the Alexander Technique.
This is a brief, but precise all-round introduction which is informed by the author’s interests in scientific research into the effects of the Technique. The British Medical Journal wrote: “It {the Technique} is difficult to explain without practical experience, but Chris Stevens provides an excellent introduction.” Illustrated with amusing cartoons. Revised edition contains a new chapter on how modern scientific ideas complement the Technque.

These are the proceedings of a conference held in Denmark in 1987. Three of the five articles it contains are “Muscle Spindles and their relevance to the Alexander Technique” by Kathleen J. Ballard, “Elastic Tissues and their role in movement” by Finn Bojsen-Møller, and “A Study of Stress amongst professional musicians” by Michael Nielsen. The latter describes the results of a study where 39 members of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra were divided into three groups and each group was allocated a method for reduction of stress: beta-blockers, exercises and the F. M. Alexander Technique. New edition contains a postscript which up-dates some of the information.
