Weed, Donald L. (Don Weed)
This is an edited transcript of 15-plus hours of an introductory course to the Interactive Teaching Method in 1993. This method of teaching aims to retrain the pupils manner of thinking and self-direction through the use of concept study, confrontation, group dynamics and experiential, short lessons in activity - a sort of Socratic dialogue where the answer is teased out of the pupil. The author also emphasizes the role of humour and storytelling in teaching and demonstrates his method.

This is the first volume of a series, Alexander Commentaries, and constitutes a part of the authors Interactive Teaching Method courses. The book annotates almost all of the first 21 pages of F. P. Jones Freedom to Change. Two predominant themes in this exegesis are: 1) the need to make words, actions and thoughts consistent with one another, and 2) that we are well-made and only have to prevent interference in order to perform well.

Since 1973 the author has used Alexanders written work in his classes and believes that a person does not understand something unless they can talk about it easily and well. The workbook contains 844 study questions and 169 essay questions for selected chapters in F. P. Joness and E. Maisels books and a chapter from Constructive Conscious Control. The questions are designed to lead the reader point by point through the reading material. In addition it contains information bits for the chapters - one-sentence extracts which also function as clues to the answers for the questions. There are 8 self-administered examinations which consist of 15 questions (5 points each), two essays (15 and 10 points) and an extra credit question (5 points). Answers are not given, nor is there judgement on ones ability as a teacher based on ones total score.

The author studied with Marjorie Barstow in 1972-75. This book is an attempt to bring the structure, excitement, and ideas of the Basic Principles class into a textbook format. The author has studied Alexanders writings in excruciating detail and discusses over 4 chapters the steps Alexander went through in developing the Technique. Other chapters cover how muscles work, the relationship between planning, thinking, moving and feeling, how habits are formed, the ways in which people limit themselves, the importance of trusting ones reasoning as opposed to ones feeling. Contains appendices.

Wielopolska, Kitty Merrick (1900-88) + Armstrong, Joe
Kitty (Catharine) Wielopolska (née Merrick, 1900-1988) was a friend of Lulie Westfeldt who joined Alexanders first training course in 1931. This interview was conducted in the late 1970s. Chapter One (40 pages) tells Wielopolskas early history and considers Westfeldts comments about Alexander and the first training course in her book, Alexander The Man and His Work. (Wielopolska largely disagrees with Westfeldt.) Chapter Two (70 pages) relates Wielopolskas battle with schizophrenia and her Christian outlook. When the schizophrenia attacks abated, she retrained as a teacher with Peter Macdonald 1969-72, and from 1977 until her death she ran her own training course. Chapters Three (8 pages), Four (10 pages) and Five (8 pages) consider, among other things, how to give the orders (e.g. the importance of verbalising them), a broader vision of the Technique, and orders for the eyes. Unstructured and inconclusive.

Williams, Peggy (1916-2003) + Park, Glen
In this interview Peggy Williams recalls her experience of first meeting with Alexander in 1946. She recalls the effects of her initial lessons and goes on to describe the difficulties and challenges she faced in her early days of training with Alexander and teaching the Technique. Many interesting insights into Alexander and his technique arise from this personal perspective. (G. Park)
