Review by Malcolm Williamson
First published in STATNews, vol. 5 no. 2, September 1998. It becomes increasingly difficult to keep pace with new publications on the Technique. Of several on my shelves, still unread (including Scarano, 1997 and Gorman, 1997) I selected these two books. Both are beautifully produced; one is short and the other gives fascinating details of lessons with Alexander and his assistants.

“A Step-by-Step Guide” is a dinky, little book (5” x 7”) full of colourful illustrations and diagrams. On the whole, the book gives good simple explanations without being over simplistic. There are inevitably a few niggles. Some of the anatomical descriptions are not clear and are likely to lead to misconceptions. “Coping” with gravity seems an unnecessarily arduous approach to living as does “moving from one position to another”. But this is a jolly, “Thomas the Tank Engine” sort of a book that will make a highly suitable stocking-filler when the Season is upon us.
