| Background to the sale |
Most of F. M. Alexanders estate went to his youngest brother, Beaumont Alexander. Beaumont sold off the Penhill Estate, and moved out of Ashley Place when the lease expired. It is probable that he sold most of the furniture. Some items may have been lost in the fire in Grove Hall Hotel where Beaumont and his family lived for some time. Beaumonts widow, Joyce, inherited what was left and, according to her son and grandson, took great care of the items which came from Ashley Place. After her death, the items were stored by her son. The items were then passed on to the grandson (F. M. Alexanders grandnephew) who has now moved abroad and is therefore unable to keep them. He wishes the items to be taken care of, and trusts that this auction will ensure that a good home is found for them.
There are a few more items (4 or 5) which belonged to F. M. Alexander, but it has not been practically possible to include them in this auction. There may therefore be a second auction in the future. News of this will be posted on the Mouritz website.
The provenance of the items has been estimated by Jean M. O. Fischer based on consultation with the nephew and grandnephew of F. M. Alexander and other sources.
The Ebay auction has been chosen in order to make the items available worldwide* and in order to make the process transparent and open.
* Subject to despatch restrictions for collection-in-person only items.
